From May 18-24, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 288 adults and 88 children following 48 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review
  • Patch and News12 reported on the #LIRedCross helping 4 adults and 4 children after a fire on Jeanette Ave in Inwood (Nassau County) on Memorial Day.
  • Also on Memorial Day, News12 and Hoodline reported on the Red Cross helping 2 adults and 2 children after a fire on University Ave in Highbridge (Bronx).
  • On Saturday, 5,000 volunteers from all over Long Island, showed up in the rain to honor all the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military. The #LIRedCRoss continues to show up and offer refreshments, coffee, snacks, and flags at Calverton National Cemetery.
  • A little rain did not stop our team from participating in Memorial Day Weekend celebration at the Intrepid Museum in recognition of the men and women in uniform who have served our country.
  • Benson kicked off Memorial Day weekend with these pet safety tips!
  • Over the weekend, Red Cross disaster response teams canvassed Hollis (Queens) to identify residents who needed assistance and assisted with muck-and-gut clean-up work following severe flooding.
  • After Super Typhoon Sinlaku, #LIRedCross volunteer Peter King flew to Tinian, Northern Mariana Islands to support families in a local shelter, sharing stories and strength with fellow volunteers.
  • Our thanks to Ross and Sue for sharing information regarding Red Cross programs and how to prepare for disasters with community members Greenwich Town Party.
  • Video Short: Disaster Health Services volunteer Chris Kalish shares health challenges a person might face after a disaster.
  • In her latest column in the Greenwich Sentinel, our Metro New York North CEO Stephanie Dunn Ashley celebrates the spirit of the American Red Cross that has served the community for 145 years and continues today.
  • For more than 20 years, Uikki-Onosai O’Bryant has served New Yorkers through the American Red Cross, first as a volunteer and now as Senior Community Disaster Program Manager for the Greater New York Region. #AAPIMonth

From May 11-17, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 225 adults and 60 children following 50 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review
  • Last Saturday, the Red Cross teamed up with FDNY and other local groups to install free smoke alarms and share fire safety education in more than 70 Queens homes.
  • For #AAPIMonth, we featured volunteer Les Sugai, who has volunteered with the American Red Cross for more than two decades, in this video.
  • SAF team came out to support the amputee vets at the Pedals of Honor 2026 adaptive cycling clinic held in Central Park.
  • Last Wednesday, we recognized and celebrated the dedicated #MetroNYNRedCross volunteers who serve the West Point community at our annual volunteer recognition event.
  • We also teamed up with PSEG Long Island, National Grid, and Northville to install free smoke alarms for local families in Manorville, NY (Suffolk County).
  • We shared this viral video short of the #LIRedCross helping 7 residents after a fire on Rockaway Ave in Valley Stream, NY (Nassau County) on Easter Sunday.
  • Senator Siela Bynoe is helping to #EndHomeFires with this Sound the Alarm PSA.
