From August 25 – 31, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 98 adults and 27 children following 30 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

 
Last Week in Review

• Last Sunday, we provided preparedness information for disasters big and small to families at the Brentwood Salsa Festival.
• The #RedCross showcased its Yankees Community Service Award, displayed in the Disaster Responder area on #ThankfulThursday.
• Council Member Carmen De La Rosa thanked the Red Cross and other partners for participating in a two-day back-to-school giveaway event.
• We posted a #TBT video of a back-to-school safety challenge, created in 1994, in collaboration with FEMA and the Red Cross.
• Maria talks about her deployment experience building connections with migrant children in Midland, TX in this viral short video.
• Pacific Palisades wildfire survivor Missy Romoff #SlayedTheDayAway by inspiring others to be resilient while training for Team #RedCross at the #TCSNYCMarathon.
• Jaime explains how he rizzed up a girl by donating blood.
• Last Tuesday, LongIsland.com, Syosset Advance, Patch, the Long Island Press, Long Island Life, Newsday, and the Daily Voice reported on the #LIRedCross providing emergency assistance to 19 adults and 6 children after a fire in Woodbury (Nassau County).
• Also on Tuesday, News12 reported on the Red Cross providing temporary lodging to a resident after a fire in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn.
• We posted a viral short showcasing Red Cross efforts in assisting 4 families after a fire in Crotona Park East, the Bronx.
• We collaborated with Assemblymen Manny De Los Santos and Jordan J.G. Wright to produce an upcoming PSA on helping their constituents get free smoke alarms with the Get Alarmed NYC program.

• Yesterday, News12 reported on the Red Cross providing temporary lodging to 9 households in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn.
• Also yesterday, the #LIRedCross distributed water at the Heather's Helper's 5K in Islip Terrace (Suffolk County).
• On Sunday, #MNYNRedCross shared important disaster preparedness information with families at the Ossining Back to School Festival.
• On Saturday, Daily Voice and Long Island Life & Politics reported on #LIRedCross providing emergency assistance to 2 adults and their pets in East Rockaway (Nassau County).
• Over the weekend, Pedro the Penguin shared information about volunteer opportunities at La Jornada Back-to-School event
• Last Wednesday, Patch, LongIsland.com, the Long Island Herald, and Long Island Life & Politics reported on the Red Cross providing emergency assistance to displaced residents after a house fire in Bellmore (Nassau County).
• On Wednesday, we provided school supplies and free smoke alarms at the Comunidad Latinx Back-to-School event.
• We shared girlboss Kelly’s story about her dad being saved by someone who knew CPR as she trains to run with Team Red Cross at the #TCSNYCMarathon.
• Last Tuesday, we celebrated World Humanitarian Day by displaying a collection of vests from various international Red Cross societies — which are now hanging in our GNY HQ.
• Mike, a mass care leader, tells the story of how he was able to build relationships in the Red Cross to make the work easier.
• We shared about a Red Cross response to a June 30 fire on Fteley Avenue in the Bronx, assisting 24 residents, in this viral short.

• Last Friday, CBS2, NBC News, NY1, and The Bronx Daily reported on the Red Cross assisting families after a fire in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan.
• CBS2, amNY, and News12 also reported on the Red Cross providing emergency assistance to nine households in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn on Friday.
• We shared CPR, health, and disaster preparedness information at the Black Health Matters Health Summit & Expo.
• Early last Monday, News12 and CBS2 reported on the Red Cross providing temporary lodging to four families after a fire in Crotona Park East in the Bronx.
• Noah Ives, producer of the Barstool Sports podcast “Chicks in the Office,” overcame his fear to check off donating blood on his 30 before 30 bucket list.
• The BBC published a retrospective on how the 2003 Northeast Blackout impacted New Yorkers and included several quotes from our 2021 "Disasters Untold" podcast episode; we also shared a #TBT video of the memorable disaster.

• On Thursday, News12 reported on Red Cross in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn providing 7 adults and 4 children with emergency assistance.

• Last Saturday, #LIRedCross CEO Jose Dominguez represented #RedCrossNY at the 3rd annual Black Authors Festival.
• We shared the #GOATed story of Alexis and the #SoundTheAlarm campaign, installing 222 smoke alarms and protecting 69 households from home fires.
• Last Thursday, Patch and the Greenwich Sentinel reported on the #MNYNRedCross holding its Battle of the Clubs blood donation challenge in Greenwich, CT.
• On International Lifeguard Appreciation Day, we celebrated the amazing story of Brian Maloney and Thomas Turchiano using their #RedCross lifeguard training to help save a life.
• Last week, Rockland Times, Mid-Hudson News, and the Rockland Daily reported on Rockland County holding its Five Towns Challenge, hosted by State Senator Bill Weber, to see which town could collect the most blood donations and have the most first-time donors.
• On Monday, we joined The Today Show show as they featured a segment about the importance of blood donations – with host Craig Melvin making a donation live on the air.

• Last Friday, the #LIRedCross provided water to bikers at the Wounded Warrior Project’s 18th Annual Soldier Ride in Babylon, NY.
• Last Thursday, the Red Cross partnered with Assemblymember Steven Raga and the FDNY to install smoke alarms throughout Queens.
• Through the week, the Red Cross provided information on how to combat extreme summer heat.
