The Metro NY Home Fire Team in Mount Vernon with Board Members for National Fire Prevention Week 

Over the last seven days, the Greater New York Red Cross provided emergency assistance to 129 adults and 41 children for 49 local disaster responses. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review 

• This past weekend, volunteers from Red Cross and MIRA USA installed 46 free smoke alarms in Westchester County, as well as educating 16 homes about fire safety.
• Last Friday, the Metro NY Home Fire Team was in Mount Vernon with Board Chair Lisa Cooper and Board Member Ted Berenblum to promote fire safety with special partners.
• The Metro NY North Home Fire Team was also in Greenwich, CT at the Fire Station last Thursday to inform and educate about fire safety within homes.
• We welcomed IFRC’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations Laura Olson to our headquarters to discuss the work of the IFRC, its delegation to the UN, key global initiatives and more.
• Shoutouts to amazing volunteers like Mitch, Kiki, and Anthony from Long Island who are willing to deploy to Florida to help residents recover from Hurricane Ian.
• Last week during Fire Prevention Week, we took part in the Huntington Manor Fire Department Fire Safety Open House to inform residents about overall safety and free smoke alarm installations.
• Last weekend, GNY Volunteers hosted the Youth Climate Summit, with more than 60 volunteers to discuss disaster relief, fire safety, and more. Watch the livestreams of Day 1 and Day 2!

• Now more than ever, dedicated and passionate civic leaders are needed to serve the Red Cross. Apply to begin a full-time AmeriCorps service year with us.

Last Week in Review 

• Over the weekend, members of the Long Island Disaster Action Team and Emergency Management team took part in an Active Shooter Drill in New Hyde, NY.
• Last Saturday, students packed 200 "After the Fire" packets for the Long Island Red Cross as part of the Annual Great Give Back event at the Brentwood Library.
• Last week was National Fire Prevention Week, we posted helpful facts, tips, and information about escaping fires.
• FDNY DART member Richard Marucheau received a thoughtful note while providing support and supplies to those affected by Hurricane Ian in Florida.
• More than 1900 Red Crossers are aiding those affected by Ian, like our own local volunteers Lenia, Magnolia and Vivian.

There are more than 100 Red Cross ERVs on the roads in Florida delivery meals and relief supplies to people struggling in hardest hit areas.

• As of last week, 31 Red Cross team members are deployed from our region to support our neighbors in Florida like Rok in pet liaison and Bruce and Bob distributing food.
• Watch our own External Relations Officer Desiree speak to ABC7NY “The Countdown” on the ongoing Hurricane Ian relief efforts down in Florida and how local volunteers are providing support.
• Greater New York Logistics Team Members are helping ensure that supplies, equipment and people are reaching communities in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Fiona.
• Over the weekend, Long Island Red Cross was providing information on how to prepare for emergencies at the Mill Neck Manor Apple Festival.
• Shout out and deep gratitude to NYC Council Member Erik Bottcher who stopped by the American Red Cross in Greater New York Headquarters today (which is in his district) to record the Home Fire Safety PSA.
• Last Thursday, 60 students from Our Lady of Victory School were taught emergency preparedness through the Pillowcase Project program.

• Watch CBS NEW YORK, PIX 11 and News 12 coverage on Red Cross volunteers being deployed to Florida to provide relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.
• We are so proud and grateful to all of our Red Crossers who have raised their hands over the past few months to support disasters across the country. Among them are Bruce Vesloski and Bob , Caitlin and Vivian and Nanci.
• Last Sunday, Assembly Member Karines Reyes tweeted an update about a fire on Commonwealth Ave in the Bronx, where the Red Cross assisted 3 families.
• Last Friday, members of the Greater New York Tiffany Circle of Women Leaders and Clara’s Council grabbed their ladders and drills to help install FREE smoke alarms in the Bronx.
• Last Monday evening, GNY American Red Cross provided emergency housing and financial assistance to a family after a fire on Edson Ave in the Bronx.
• The Long Island Press published photo highlights from the Heroes Among Us Gala featuring our amazing honorees.

Last Week in Review

• Amid a flurry of global disasters, the American Red Cross is helping around the world.
• Last Thursday, we held our Long Island Heroes Among Us gala at the historical Oheka Castle.
• At the gala, we honored Suffolk County Sherriff Dr. Errol Toulon with the Humanitarian Award, Antonina Barry and Daniel Shea with the Good Samaritan Heroes Award and NY Cancer and Blood Specialists with the Corporate Leadership Award.
• We also gave a special recognition to Long Island volunteer Magnolia Chiri at the event.
• The Greenwich Sentinel helped welcome our new Metro NY North Chapter Board Chair and Board Members.
• Local Disaster Mental Health volunteer Catherine joined more than 190 trained Red Cross volunteers on the ground in Puerto Rico helping assess the damage and delivering emergency supplies to shelters where possible in the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona.

• For her birthday, Nancy and her husband Rick volunteered at the New Castle Community Day 2022 in Chappaqua on Saturday!
• Long Island Red Cross Volunteers installed free smoke alarms in Long Beach, Baldwin, Elmont and Franklin Square!
• Last Thursday, the Greater New York Region held an in-person tabletop exercise to continually train and prepare workforce to meet mission critical functions in various disaster response operations.
• We also participated in the City’s Pets and Service Animals Fair as part of National Preparedness Month.
• Preparations for this week’s Long Island Gala are underway!
• News 12 Long Island reported on fire in North Amityville where the Red Cross assisted the family with financial aid and recovery support.
• News 12 Bronx reported on the major fire on Davidson Street where the Red Cross has provided immediate assistance and emergency housing to 30 families, including 99 total individuals.
• Last Tuesday, ABC7 News reported the Red Cross provided 10 families with financial aid, emergency housing and food after a 4-alarm fire on Halsey St in Brooklyn.

Last Week in Review

• September 11, 2001, marks one of the most devastating days in American history. Over twenty years later, many Red Cross volunteers can still recall their own 9/11 experiences as if it happened yesterday.
• Metro NY North Chapter CEO Stephanie Dunn Ashley attended the annual 9/11 memorial at Cos Cob Park as was reported by the Greenwich Time.
• Mental Health Volunteer Dr. James Halpern reflected on experience at Ground Zero with Spectrum News 1.
• We are deeply saddened by the news that Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II has died. The Queen was a patron of the British Red Cross, and always supported the Red Cross mission and values.
• Last Saturday, we held our first all-day Preparedness in the Park for the community at J. Hood Wright Park. We had over 50 volunteers supporting several stations throughout the park. We also thank Council Member Carmen De La Rosa for taking time out of her busy day to support our event!
• Last Thursday, the Long Island Red Cross provided financial aid to a family after a fire in Amityville.
• Last Tuesday, we participated in a Hurricane Preparation Town Hall hosted by Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas, NY Senator Jessica Ramos and Congresswoman Grace Meng.
