Over the last seven days, the Greater New York Red Cross has provided emergency assistance to 153 adults and 44 children following 59 local disaster responses. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• The GNY Red Cross ERV team served over 100 volunteers last Saturday in support of the Wreaths Across America event held at the Cypress Hills National Cemetery.
• Our Service to the Armed Forces team joined our Metro NY North Chapter Board to collect and distribute nearly 600 new clothing items for veterans as part of the Holiday for Heroes program.
• Last Friday, ABC7 and CBS NY reported on a 4-alarm fire on Clarkson Ave. in Brooklyn where the Red Cross assisted 11 families.
• The Staten Island Advance reported on Borough President Vito Fossella joining the American Red Cross in Greater New York to install smoke alarms in a Prince’s Bay home Tuesday to raise awareness of our free smoke alarm and fire safety campaign.
• Last Wednesday, one of our amazing volunteers Marilyn Vallejo returned home from Germany after a week spent facilitating Residency Workshops for service members overseas, as part of the SAF program.
• As 2022 winds down, we have been looking back at our work this past year, including Preparedness in the Park, Hurricane Ian in Florida, and the Long Island Heroes Among Us gala.

• Over the weekend, Newsday reported on our partnership with NY State Assembly Member Michaelle Solages to help install free smoke alarms in her Nassau County district.
• Last Wednesday, NY State Senator Luis R. Sepúlveda helped #endhomefires by joining our Home Fire team installing smoke alarms in his district. Click here for NY1 Noticias coverage.
• As the weather gets colder, our Home Fire team has been out in force in Queens and other areas installing free smoke alarms these past several weeks.
• We continued to look back at our 2022 highlights, like the hurricane preparedness press conference in Long Beach, First Lady Jill Biden visiting the SAF team in Eastern Europe and the Sound the Alarm campaign in Riverhead.

Last Week in Review

• NY1, FOX 5 NY and CBS NY reported on how the Red Cross assisted 42 displaced families after a massive fire on W 141st in Hamilton Heights, Manhattan on Saturday.
• Congrats to the Greenwich Police Department for winning the annual Battle of the Badges Blood drive!
• Last week, we reviewed some of our best 2022 moments including the New York International Auto Show, New York landmarks across the state lit up bright red for Red Cross Month, and we hosted a series of blood drives at West Point.
• Congratulations to our #LIRedCross Board Members, Gary Brown and Stuart Richner of Richner Communications, Inc. , who were recently recognized by the Nassau Community College Foundation during its annual Gala.
• Nine weeks after Hurricane Ian, Red Cross team members—including 11 from Greater New York— remain on the ground in Florida to support residents recovering from this devastating storm.
• Local volunteers like Metro NY North Volunteer Daniel Neiman has been deployed to Sarasota, FL to do intakes, casework and appeals in the ongoing Hurricane Ian recovery.

• We hope you all had a good Thanksgiving! This past week, we shared some travel safety tips for a safe visit to your loved ones.
• We also shared Turkey Frying Tips and Safety for Oven Fires.
• Our Regional CEO Mary Barneby shared this special message of gratitude for our staff, volunteers, friends, and family.
• As the year winds down, we started sharing our Images of the Year series of photos, starting with this one from last January of our Red Cross team members at a vigil following a devasting fire in the Bronx.
• To those who donated blood recently, we gave away an exclusive Red Cross Beanie!
• Following a fire on Calvert St in Harrison, NY, the Red Cross opened a shelter for affected residents at a local community Center.

Last Week in Review

• Our colleagues at the Western NY Red Cross have been aiding those affected by the massive snowstorm in and around Buffalo by opening shelters for displaced residents and stranded drivers.
• As the weather gets colder, we shared tips about space heater safety, candle safety, as well as what to do if stranded in a snow storm.
• The Mayor of New Rochelle, Noam Bramson, recorded a PSA supporting our “Sound the Alarm” program to get free smoke alarms installed in high-risk neighborhoods.
• A big THANK YOU to the Greenwich Chapter of the National League of Young Men who recently held a carwash to support the Red Cross response to Hurricane Ida and raised $4,500!
• Council Member Ari Kagan attended a recent Red Cross presentation hosted by JASA Seniors on storm and hurricane preparedness.
• The Red Cross assisted 7 families displaced by a fire on Bryant Avenue in the Bronx by providing emergency housing and financial assistance.

Last Week in Review

• Throughout the week, we celebrated Veterans Day in many ways…
• Last Friday, Red Crossers marched in the Greenwich and New York City Veterans Day Parades.
• Alongside our partners, we organized the annual Women of Service for America event in Central Park on Wednesday, celebrating special honorees for their contributions to our nation and to our local communities. The event was livestreamed on Facebook. You can also find coverage on our Youtube channel and on NY1.
• We also featured some of our Red Cross colleagues who served our nation in this story.
• A group of State Farm volunteers helped the Greater NY Red Cross prep Connex boxes for disaster relief.
• Dozens of American Red Cross team members from the Greater NY area have supported the organization’s response to Hurricane Ian, including our Communications Officer Michael de Vulpillieres who wrote this story about his experience.
• On the 4-year anniversary of the 2018 Camp Fire that destroyed the small California town of Paradise, we reshared our 2-episode podcast series reflecting on this historic disaster.
• With severe weather threatening our area last week, we reminded residents to stay safe.

Over the last seven days, the Greater New York Red Cross provided emergency assistance to 119 adults and 32 children for 51 local disaster responses. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• On Sunday, our Red Cross Red Team ran in the TCS New York City Marathon, and the day before, the team enjoyed a lunch with our board to support their efforts.
• As reported by the New York Times, around 40 people were injured in a high-rise fire in Midtown, Manhattan and those who are displaced received help from the Red Cross.
• We reminded everyone for Daylight Saving Time to “turn and test” your smoke alarms in addition to enjoying an extra hour of sleep.
• With the New York City Fire department and partnership with Senator Luis R. Sepúlveda, the Red Cross will install free smoke detectors in area homes, as well as providing fire safety education.
• The Red Cross presented Council Member Mercedes Narcisse with a Red Cross materials display for her constituents.
• The team of all female team of Tiffany, Whitney, and Dianne installed free smoke alarms in Queens.
