Over the last seven days, the Greater New York Red Cross has provided emergency assistance to 135 adults and 21 children following 49 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

• Over the weekend, team members from across the region
  gathered to hone their skills in a functional exercise at the NYC office.
• Last Saturday, News 12 reported the Red Cross assisting a family after a fire in the Highbridge section of the Bronx.
• Amazing Long Island Red Cross volunteers headed out into the community to install free lifesaving smoke alarms!
• The Long Island Red Cross held a meeting at the Brentwood Library to introduce the Mass care team and give updates on recent activities.
• We published a story on Red Crosser Maria Millan who has traveled the country to ensure that critical relief supplies are available to support communities in need after disasters.
• Continuing our recognition of Black History Month, we shared this video on one of the most significant volunteer leaders of the Red Cross, Gwen T. Jackson.
• Last Wednesday, we welcomed two Red Crossers from Croce Rossa Italiana/Italian Red Cross.

• Last Tuesday, at an all-staff meeting, we celebrated Lallita and Shirley for their extraordinary service in the region and beyond.

• Mar 25: In partnership with the Brentwood Public Library, the American Red Cross on Long Island will host Prepare Brentwood, a day-long community event featuring safety courses, family readiness training, service opportunities, refreshments, prizes, and more! Prepare Brentwood is free to the public and open to residents of all ages.

• Last week, we had an incredible evening at our annual Heroes Among Us #RedCrossGala. Congratulations to our honorees: BNY Mellon, John B. Osborn, Fritz Sam, Corion Evans, and Davyon L. Johnson. And THANK YOU to our donors who helped us raise over $1 million to support our humanitarian mission!
• PIX11 featured Gala honoree Fritz Sam on the night of the event and invited our two younger heroes to be interviewed in studio the next day.
• Last Friday, CBSNY, ABC7NY, PIX11 and Staten Island Advance reported on a devastating 4-alarm Staten Island fire where the Red Cross assisted displaced residents with financial assistance.
• Last Wednesday morning in the West Village, NYC Council Member Erik Bottcher installed free smoke alarms in his constituent’s homes alongside our Home Fire Preparedness team.
• Last Tuesday, for Valentines Day, we share the stories of two of our favorite Red Cross couples: Linda and Brian McMullan and Sarah and Conrad Meyer.

Last Week in Review

• Last Monday, Council Member Marjorie Velázquez co-hosted an online Red Cross training session on what to do when disaster strikes & Hands-Only CPR.
• Continuing our #BlackHistoryMonth celebration, we featured Frances Reed Elliott Davis who was the first African American nurse at the Red Cross, among her many accomplishments.
• Armed with compassion and determination in their hearts, our Home Fire Campaign volunteers, AmeriCorps members and interns conducted “rapid response” free smoke alarm installations in Staten Island and Brooklyn following fatal fires.
• Nationally over the past 100 days, the American Red Cross has responded to more than 80 large-scale disasters. Dozens of volunteers and staff from the Greater NY Region have deployed to support these efforts.

• Over the weekend, Red Cross Training Services & Home Fire volunteers were at the Long Island MetroFire / EMS Expo talking to groups like the Wantagh Fire Department Explorers about #firesafety and getting #CPR #FirstAid certified!
• Last week for #BlackHistoryMonth we began to celebrate the vibrant heritage and significant contributions that Black Americans like Frederick Douglass have made to our country and to the Red Cross.
• Last Friday, the NY Post, ABC7NY and CBS NY reported on Red Cross assistance following a 2-alarm fatal fire on W. 180th Street in Manhattan.
• Congratulations to all the New York State Red Cross Legislators we honored this year during our annual advocacy trip to Albany! We are grateful for their partnership and support to help communities before, during and after disasters big and small.
• The Bronx Times reported on 3 devastating fires that struck the Bronx in the last month. As part of their coverage the paper spoke to Communications Officer Michael de Vulpillieres who provided updates on Red Cross assistance.
• To close out #NationalBloodDonorMonth, we featured Debbie, her daughter Loni, and Red Cross board member Lauren Walsh who all shared why donating blood is important to them.

Last Week in Review

• ABC7NY, CBSNY and News 12 Bronx reported on Red Cross assistance for 5 families after a fire on Evergreen Ave in the Bronx this weekend.
• Therapy dog volunteer SweetPea celebrated her 14th birthday this Saturday by joining other HVPaws4cause teams to support soldiers at an event at a local military resource center.
• Many volunteers and staff came together last Saturday for a disaster training exercise.
• Last Thursday, PIX11, CBSNY and Bronx Times reported on Red Cross teams providing relief following a 4-alarm fire on Carpenter Ave in the Bronx that forced more than 50 families from their homes. NY State Senator Jamaal T. Bailey thanked the Red Cross and City Emergency Responders for their efforts.
• For #NationalBloodDonorMonth, we featured Stacie Kloepfer-Brocks and Bob Brady who shared why donating blood is important to them.
• Metro NY North Red Cross volunteer Dan Neiman has been in Florida these past few weeks working with a team of volunteers from around the world, doing damage assessment and providing bridge financial assistance to residents whose homes suffered major damage from Hurricane Ian.

• Over the weekend, four members of the Paris Chapter of the France Red Cross visited our NYC Headquarters.
• Sunday marked the 14-year anniversary of the emergency landing of Flight 1459 better known as the "Miracle on the Hudson." Listen to our podcast episode from season 3: "Disasters Untold," devoted to retelling the incredible events of that day.
• Thanks to our Red Cross volunteers at West Point who supported an annual blood drive for the cadets this week during #nationalblooddonormonth.
• Long Island News 12 and Newsday reported on Red Cross volunteer Doug McNally leaving for California to support our response to massive storms there.
• Councilman of the town of Babylon, Terence McSweeney, showed his support for the Sound the Alarm campaign by posting this PSA.
• Last Wednesday, Red Cross team members from across our region gathered in Times Square to ring the closing bell of Nasdaq in honor of #NationalBloodDonorMonth.
• Bronx BP Vanessa Gibson, Senator Gustavo Rivera and Council Member Althea Stevens commemorated the 1st year anniversary of the tragic Bronx Twin Parks fire by asking residents to sign up for free smoke alarms through the Red Cross.
