• BIG NEWS for our Greater New York Region: After three wonderful years, our regional CEO Mary Barneby has retired! We are so grateful for her leadership and Red Cross spirit. Once a Red Crosser, always a Red Crosser! We are excited to welcome Celena Roldan Sarillo as our interim CEO! 
• On Friday, our Service to the Armed Forces Team supported our partner organization Blue Star Families, partnering with Starbucks to hold their “Family Coffee Connection.” Thank you to our furry friends Mayhem, Ivy Grace & Ted for your exceptional volunteer work! 
• Volunteer Spotlight: NYC Marathon runner Heather runs in support of the Red Cross, “I cannot wait to see how the money I fundraise turns into shelters, hot meals, local disaster response, and many more tangible items for those in need!” Click here to learn more about Heather’s story. 
• This Saturday, American Red Cross of Greater New York staff, volunteers, and board members were certified in CPR & AED at Pronto of Long Island! 
• Regional Senior Director John Waldman visited the Bronx and our partner Assemblyman John Zaccaro Jr. on Saturday. We are deeply appreciative of Assemblyman Zaccaro’s support and desire to bring our lifesaving program to his constituents. 
• Blood Donation Spotlight: “It’s the right thing to do,” explained Cadet Jonas Ebner of the United States Military Academy at West Point, giving blood at every opportunity.

Last Week in Review

• Last Monday, we commemorated #WorldSickleCellDay, raising awareness of sickle cell disease, the extreme pain associated with it, and how blood transfusions can help. 
• Monday morning, The New York Times and Forbes reported the Greater New York Region provided emergency housing and assistance to multiple families after a fire in Manhattan’s Chinatown. 
• Together with NY State Assembly Member Brian Cunningham, the Red Cross will install free smoke alarms in area homes and provide fire safety education to families in their homes. To sign up, visit this link. 
• Saturday morning, NBC 12 reported the American Red Cross' summer blood donation campaign. Sign up to donate here! 
• Did you catch Richard, Azania, Jin, and Michael at Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene, Brooklyn on Sunday? We are so grateful they were able to share important preparedness information during the community health fair. 
• We had a great Sunday marching in the #pride parade in NYC. Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to march with us! 
• Blood Donation Spotlight: After receiving blood as a child, Cadet Christopher Letarte is a senior at the US Military Academy Prep School at West Point, giving blood at every opportunity.

• On Tuesday, our volunteers from Hudson Valley Paws for Cause and their furry friends joined us at West Point Military Academy for our The Red Cross Paws For Kids Event. 
• On Wednesday, News 12 reported the NYC Disaster Action Team assisted over 100 people after a Wakefield apartment fire. 
• June is National #PetPreparednessMonth. The Red Cross Pet Safety mobile app can help you discover how to include your pet in your emergency plan. 
• We celebrated international #WorldDonorDay on Thursday! Thank you to all our blood donors for your life-saving donations. Sign up to be a blood donor today! 
• Thursday morning, ABC 7 and News 12 reported the Greater NY Disaster Action Team assisted multiple families after a fire spread through a multi-family apartment building in Brooklyn.
• Regional Senior Director John Waldman visited Rockland County and our partner Assemblyman Ken Zabrowski on Thursday. We are deeply appreciative of Assemblyman Zabrowski's support and desire to bring our lifesaving program to his constituents.

Last Week in Review

• The Greater NY Red Cross is continuing to support residents displaced by the 5-alarm fire on Noble Avenue in the Bronx Sunday night. 
• Great Sunday at Finkelstein Memorial Library for Prepare Spring Valley! Together we provided important fire safety information, taught lifesaving skills, and enjoyed meeting our neighbors in Spring Valley. 
• Several Hudson Valley Paws for a Cause teams visited with the 417th EVCC unit before their redeployment. 
• We spent Saturday commending our incredible volunteers for their life-saving service at our annual End-of-the-Year Volunteer Awards Ceremony. Congratulations to the awarded volunteers and thank you to all who attended! 
• Many thanks to our community helpers from Greenwich Fire, Police, EMS, Animal Control and to our instructors for a great week of learning and fun at Safety Town and congrats to all the graduates heading to kindergarten!
• On Thursday, the Red Cross Tiffany Circle of Women Leaders of Greater New York held its annual Women Who Lead Luncheon event. It was a beautiful day at Bryant Park with our fantastic panel of women in sports. Thank you for an inspiring afternoon! 
• Last Tuesday morning, News 12 Westchester and Mid Hudson News reported the Metro NY North Disaster Action Team assisted 15 individuals when fire spread through 2 multi-family buildings in Newburgh, NY.
• Blood Donation Spotlight: Originally from Tennessee, Cadet Marcus Vega is a first year at the US Military Academy Prep School at West Point, giving blood at every opportunity.

• The Long Island Red Cross and partners kicked off the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season with this Preparedness Press Conference.
• Thanks to our Red Cross volunteers and partners who participated across our region in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester and Rockland counties this weekend. We appreciate your efforts to practice and learn to respond to disasters big and small.
• The Metro NY North Red Cross chapter joined the Day of Hope event set up by the City of Mount Vernon, NY, and the Westchester Latinos Unidos to assist displaced residents from the Mount Vernon Avenue fire.
• The NY Red Cross and partners kicked off the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season with the Long Island Red Cross Hurricane Press Conference
• June is National #PetPreparednessMonth. The Red Cross Pet Safety mobile app can help you discover how to include your pet in your emergency plan. 
• New York State Representative Matt Slater announced his partnership with the American Red Cross on June 1st, joining efforts to promote the Sound the Alarm campaign. 
• Red Cross volunteers have worked hard this past week to help set up Safety Town an awareness and accident prevention program for rising kindergartners. Enroll your student here!

• June 5-9, 12-16: Safety Town is a comprehensive one-week safety education program offered every summer by the American Red Cross Metro NY North Chapter that teaches awareness and accident prevention skills to children entering kindergarten in the fall. Last Week in Review

• For Memorial Day Weekend, Red Crossers participated in activities throughout the region honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice as well as current service members.
• Service to the Armed Forces volunteers and pet therapy dogs from Hudson Valley Paws for Cause were at the Intrepid this weekend for Fleet Week, welcoming service members and teaching CPR to passerbys.
• Placed flags at the Calverton Cemetery on Long Island.
• Marched in the Memorial Day Parade in Mt. Vernon.
• The Long Island Red Cross participated in the Bethpage Air Show practice.
• Metro NY North CEO Stephanie Dunn Ashley wrote about supporting military families in honor of Military Appreciation Month in her monthly column for the Greenwich Sentinel.
• Also on Saturday, the Metro NY North Red Cross tabled the Greenwich Town Party with other non-profit organizations. A parade kicked-off the event earlier in the week.
• We celebrated Red Cross volunteer nurses for National Nurse Month at the Disaster Health Services meeting.
• Our Government Liaison team met with newly elected Senator Iwen Chu and Assemblyman Steven Raga on the same day to discuss Red Cross work in their communities and future partnership opportunities.
• We spotlighted volunteer Bown Yu for raising his hand to deploy to the disaster relief operation underway in Guam after Typhoon Mawar devastated the region.
• Disaster Cycle Services held their bi-annual meeting at the Tarrytown Senior Center and GNY HQ to share ideas, get to know one another, and celebrate the work of volunteers.
• NY State Assembly Member Dana Levenberg is helping to “Sound the Alarm” about home fires with this PSA.

Last Week in Review

• Last Saturday, the Long Island Red Cross held a shelter drill at the Brentwood West Middle School.
• Thanks to everyone who helped make Sound the Alarm NYC 2023 a success last Wednesday! More than 80 volunteers came together to help #endhomefires!
• Last week, we welcomed Fatima from Cruz Roja Española to our NYC office. We shared stories of how our chapters support communities during emergencies and promised to visit if we are ever in Spain.
• The Long Island Red Cross Disaster Action Team responded to a multi-family fire on Leahy Avenue in Brentwood. Seven adults and seven children received direct client assistance.
• Continuing to celebrate #AAPIHeritageMonth, we posted a story featuring Red Cross volunteer Shah Khan who is a medical student and Disaster Action Team supervisor and has been with the Red Cross since 2016.
• NY State Assemblyman Matt Slater is helping to “Sound the Alarm” with this PSA.
• Last week, Veronica Beard hosted our Red & White Ball Wrap Party, featuring delicious treats from the Habitual Hostess.

• May 24: War. War never changes. The art of war & video games. Join the Red Cross for a journey through iconic gaming moments to learn how the law of war works.
• May 25: Wartime Protection of the Environment, Part II: Exploring Issues. In Part II of this new series, we use the recently adopted UN International Law Commission’s Principles on Protection of the Environment in Armed Conflict (PERAC) as a backdrop to explore the issues created in the cross-sections between climate change, environmental degradation and conflict before, during and after the conflict.
