• Over the weekend, the mayor of New Rochelle and the New Rochelle Fire Department joined the Red Cross to canvas the neighborhood and offer to install free smoke alarms and give fire safety tips after a recent fire in the area.
• Last Saturday, our #LIRedCross team members helped support the Wounded Warrior Project at the annual Babylon Soldier Ride.
• Last Thursday, Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton joined some of our volunteers to help install fire alarms on Staten Island.
• The River Journal shared that the Red Cross supported 22 People after two emergencies in Westchester County between July 8 and 15.
• VIDEO: We shared some safety tips on how you can beat the heat and stay safe this summer.
• Metro NY North Chapter CEO Stephanie Dunn Ashley shares summer safety tips in her latest column for the Greenwich Sentinel.
• Last Tuesday, CBS2, ABC7, 1010 WINS and NY1 reported that the Red Cross helped 3 families after a fire on Evergreen Avenue in Brooklyn.
• News12 Brooklyn also reported that the Red Cross helped 2 families after a fire on Flatbush Avenue and shared good news about a litter of puppies also impacted by the fire.
• Last Monday, the Norwood News reported that the Red Cross registered two households for emergency assistance after a fire on Creston Avenue in the Bronx.

• VIDEO: Disaster teams from our region are activating for Hurricane Beryl’s landfall in Texas, including Bruce and Bob, who drove an Emergency Response Vehicle to Texas from Long Island.
• The Red Cross and partners, including NYCHA, CAMBA, NYCEM, FDNY, NYPD, and others taught preparedness to the community at the Van Dyke Community Center in Brownsville last Saturday as part of the “Prepare the Town” program.
• Our YouTube channel crossed 1k subs!
• Meet Joanne Saunders, who began volunteering with the Red Cross and donating blood to honor her late husband after he passed away from leukemia.
• While we encouraged everyone in GNY to be safe during July 4th weekend celebrations, some Red Crossers like Viv were deployed to help during recent wildfires and flooding in New Mexico.
• Last Thursday, the Norwood News reported the Red Cross is assisting four families after a fire on East 226th Street in the Bronx.
• We posted this video reel featuring news coverage of Red Crossers helping residents after an e-bike fire in Brooklyn at the end of June.
• Throughout the summer, #LIRedCross volunteer Celia Vollmer visits libraries throughout Suffolk County to teach American Red Cross safety programs to children.

• A summer storm cancelled much of the NYC Pride March, but we are so grateful for everyone who showed up to celebrate the importance of inclusion and representation.
• Last Thursday, CBS2, NY1 and ABC7 reported on the Red Cross assisting families after an e-bike fire in Brooklyn.
• The Red Cross opened a service center at Dominican Women’s Development Center last Tuesday and Wednesday to assist the displaced residents from the fire on W 178th street the day before, covered by CBS2, NBC4, FOX5, ABC7, NY1, Univision, Telemundo and 1010 WINS.
• Also on Wednesday, ABC7 and News 12 reported on the Red Cross helping 14 families after a fire on College Ave in the Melrose section of the Bronx.
• Representative Anthony D’Esposito joined us to install smoke detectors as a part of our #SoundTheAlarm program.
• At our 2024 Volunteer Recognition Ceremony, Isabella opened the ceremony by reading her poem about volunteering and we recognized dozens of Red Crossers for their amazing work on behalf of our communities.

• Last Wednesday, the Red Cross had provided clean-up kits and financial assistance to residents following a fire on E 213th St in the Bronx
• The first tropical storm of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season has been named — #Alberto. Weather experts predict that this hurricane season will bring an above-average number of named storms, as sea surface temperatures remain higher than usual.
• Last Saturday, The Red Cross has provided residents with emergency housing and financial assistance following a fire on 14th St in Brooklyn.
• The #LIRedCross has provided financial assistance to residents following a fire on N Wading River Rd, in Wading River (#SuffolkCounty).
• The Red Cross participated in the Elmhurst Health & Hospital fair on Saturday to share important preparedness information with attendees and had a great time meeting the #NYC Health + Hospitals staff.
• On Thursday, we awarded Katharine Ristich with the American Red Cross Certificate of Merit after she used her Red Cross training to help save the life of her father when he was choking. #Lifesavingaward
• This past Sunday we celebrated our volunteers at the regionwide 2024 Volunteer Recognition event! Congratulations to all our honorees.

• At our Metro NY North Chapter Board meeting last Tuesday, we heard an inspiring story from Greenwich Police Sgt. Jason Lyman, who used his CPR training to save a life in Old Greenwich.
• Phoebe Baluyot shared what her AmeriCorps experience was like and why she chose to work with the Red Cross.
• The national American Red Cross social media channels reshared our story of Craig and Jose donating blood together for the first time as a married gay couple, highlighting the more inclusive FDA regulations about blood donation. #PrideMonth

• Our deepest thanks to all the volunteers who placed flags and decorations at Calverton National Cemetery this Memorial Day weekend to honor and remember the US service members who gave their lives in service of our country..
• Over the weekend, our Service to the Armed Forces Team warmly welcomed visitors during Fleet Week at the Intrepid and collected more than 300 cards to send to service members.
• Long Island’s own local volunteer Mitchell Ostrover was featured on the Texas Gulf Coast Red Cross blog about his daughter’s heartwarming tradition of donating platelets whenever he (or his wife, Leslie) deploys to help people in need.
• On Saturday, the Metro NY North chapter had an information table at the Greenwich Town Party and helped families sign up for the upcoming Safety Town event, where kindergarteners can learn about the people who keep them safe.
• Our SAF team kicked off Memorial Day Weekend with a special tour of the USS Bataan, which is visiting NYC for Fleet Week 2024.
• In this video, new volunteer Kehui Yan shared what it was like to volunteer for the first time with our Sound the Alarm campaign.
• Last Friday, Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas tweeted about the Red Cross assisting a family after a fire on 83rd Street in Jackson Heights, Queens.

• Congratulations to our partner General Needs Ltd on their successful event on Friday supporting the military community.
• Last Thursday we gathered our volunteers who support the community at the US Military Academy at West Point for a wonderful volunteer recognition event. This group of volunteers are the heart of the Red Cross mission at West Point.
• Last Wednesday, we kicked off Sound the Alarm NYC with volunteers and partners out across Queens and other boros to help install free smoke alarms and educate residents on fire safety.

• On “May the 4th,” Darth Vader graciously honored us with his dark presence and joined the light side of the force by donating at our blood donor center in Greenwich, CT.
• Also on Saturday, News12 Brooklyn covered a fire on Flatbush Avenue where the Red Cross responded.
• We shared a happy update to the story of Martha Richardson, a Navy veteran who was asleep in the middle of the night when a drunk driver crashed his car into her home.
• Last Thursday, our GNY Disaster Action Team volunteers responded to a fire in Bushwick, Brooklyn — registering 60 people (and 7 pets) for emergency assistance. See coverage from ABC7, CBS2, NBC4, PIX11, News12 Brooklyn, NY1, the NY Post, Bushwick Daily, and Patch.
• Last Wednesday, working with the Mastic Fire Department, the Fire Marshals of Suffolk County, StateFarm and Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, our teams installed 376 smoke alarms, 84 carbon monoxide detectors, and providing fire safety information to 106 homes.
• May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month, and we are celebrating the significant contributions that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to our country and to the Red Cross.
• To close out Pet First Aid Awareness Month, our Metro NY North chapter CEO Stephanie Dunn Ashley shared some great tips and encouraged all to keep their pets safe in her latest column for the Greenwich Sentinel.

From Apr. 8-14, the American Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 91 adults and 33 children following 35 local disaster responses. Here are some highlights from the past week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• Over the weekend, the LI Herald and Newsday covered our Sound the Alarm home fire event to install free smoke alarms for residents of Long Beach.
• With the #RedWhiteBall just a couple of weeks away, Dr. Kim Nichols and Chris Cabanillas hosted a Patron Party to thank our supporters who are helping to make the event a success.
• The GNY team rolled up their sleeves last week for blood drives at Pace University and at our regional HQ on West 49th Street.
• Last Thursday, after a 2-alarm fire on Van Siclen Ave in Brooklyn, the Red Cross assisted a family with emergency housing and financial aid.
• Happy Dog Therapy Appreciation Day to our fabulous therapy dogs who bring joy and smiles to everyone they visit.
• After a fatal fire last Tuesday in the Bronx, the NY Daily News, PIX11, and News12 reported on the Red Cross assisting one family.

Upcoming Events and Activities

• Disasters harm families. Volunteers are needed to help comfort and support people who are forced from their homes due to fires, storms, and other emergencies, so they don’t have to face tough times alone. Join the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team!
• Apr 20: American Red Cross and The Fairview Fire Department are delighted to partner up at the Greenburgh Library for Prepare with Pedro to teach children about emergency preparedness.

Preparedness Team joined the Greenwich Fire Department to teach 3-graders about fire safety.

Last Week in Review

• Throughout last week, we held our annual Disaster Ready Summit to get out volunteers trained and ready (even through a rare earthquake).
• After the surprise earthquake last Friday, we shared these safety tips on what to do after.
• Last Thursday, the Greenwich Time reported on how two Hamilton Avenue School third-graders got to be Fire-Chief-for-a-day and take their class for a fun day with the Greenwich Fire Department! Our Preparedness Team also taught the class fire safety with Buddy the Pet Therapy Dog.
• We held the fifth installment of the We Were There panel series focusing on Crisis & Operations Management and explore how our leaders have utilized these concepts during some of the largest events across Greater New York region & nationally.
• We recognized an amazing long-time Red Cross volunteer Barbara Robey as part of our #ShareTheRed celebration with a Spotlight Hero award.
• Last Wednesday, Patch.com reported on the #LIRredCross assisting 4 families with financial assistance and comfort supplies after a fire on Cake Walk Terrace in Smithtown.

• To commemorate National Vietnam War Veterans Day, our Service to the Armed Forces volunteers participated in three events this past week sponsored by the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System.
• For the final week of Women’s History Month, we featured more amazing “SHEORES” of the Red Cross: Anastasia Hannah, Julie Blanciak, Maritza Espinoza, and Liz Barker.
• THANK YOU for your support on Red Cross Giving Day that makes a difference for people affected by disasters, especially as the climate crisis continues to take a heavier toll on frontline communities.
• Our volunteer recruitment team of Glenn Kearney, Katherine Reilly, Mitchell Ostrover tabled at Nassau Community College last Tuesday.
• The River Journal covered the “Sound the Alarm” event in Peekskill on March 23.
• Throughout Red Cross Month, we played a “Who’s that Red Crosser?” game that ended with this post. The previous posts can be found here and here.
• NYC Emergency Management thanked the Red Cross team for taking the time to help train newer staff members on how we work together side by side.
