From May 12-18, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 112 adults and 33 children following 37 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• Last Saturday, in honor of Armed Forces Day, some of our 4-legged volunteers visited West Point U.S. Military Academy to show the brave men and women who currently serve in our military that their dedication, sacrifice and service is truly appreciated.
• The American Red Cross participated in a Memorial Day event at DeWitt Clinton Park to celebrate the Americans who served in World War One, many of whom lived in Hell's Kitchen and Brooklyn when they enlisted.
• Our Long Island CEO Jose Dominguez joined John Lynch at Connoisseur Media to talk about the services our volunteers deliver every day, how to nominate heroes for our upcoming Long Island Heroes Celebration, how to prepare for hurricane season, how to protect your family from home fires, and more!
• Our regional CEO Doreen Thomann-Howe presented a certificate of appreciation to IBEW Local 3 Staten Island Electrical Club for their support of our Home Fire Program.
• Last Wednesday, volunteers and partners made 103 NYC homes safer by installing free smoke alarms and educating families on fire safety as part of the third Sound the Alarm event in the region.
• Rain or shine, our incredible Service to the Armed Forces volunteers from Greater New York were honored to support our veterans at the Pedals of Honor event in Central Park.
• In this viral video short, Tyler explains how it feels good to help people by donating blood.
• Last Tuesday, we proudly recognized and honored the incredible West Point volunteers that embody the spirit of service and resilience.
• In early May at the Yankees Homecoming Dinner, the American Red Cross was presented with the prestigious Community Service Award in recognition of our ongoing efforts to support communities in times of need.

Last Week in Review

• We had an amazing Saturday in New Rochelle as 113 volunteers gathered to help #EndHomeFires during our Metro New York North Chapter Sound the Alarm event.
• News 12 reported on the Red Cross assisting 2 families after a fire on 68th street in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
• The Long Island Herald had an in-depth report on how the #LIRedCross provided emergency assistance after a fire in Glen Cove on April 17.
• We shared this video highlighting the #LIRedCross response to a carbon monoxide leak in Brentwood.
• Last Wednesday, we held our third and final volunteer recognition event of the year at the Cradle of Aviation Museum.
• We teamed up with Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano to #EndHomeFires by installing free smoke alarms and recording a PSA to raise awareness.
• For the Month of the Military Child, our Service to the Armed Forces volunteers were thrilled to join the community at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn for their annual color run to celebrate the month.
