From Mar 23-29, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 202 adults and 57 children following 52 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• News12 reported on the Red Cross helping 9 adults and 4 kids after a fire on East 174th St in Claremont Village (Bronx) on Sunday.
• Last Saturday, #LIRedCross joined with Suffolk County FRES, State Senator Monica Martinez, County Legislators Sammy Gonzalez and Tom Donnelly and Suffolk County CERT to install 254 free smoke alarms in 52 homes and provide fire safety education to 159 people in Brentwood, Bay Shore and Islip.
• News12LI also featured two volunteers, Magnolia and Jason, as well as our Long Island CEO, Jose, in a segment about the work they do to make homes safer against the risk of home fires.
• March is both Red Cross Month and Women’s History Month — making it the perfect time to celebrate the women who lead with courage, clarity, and compassion, like Katie Hill.
• Assemblyman Steven Raga received his belated Legislator of the Year medal at our “Flavors of our Community” celebration on Thursday.
• ABC7, CBS2, Norwood News, News12 and Telemundo 47 reported on the Red Cross opening a reception center after a fatal 5-alarm on East 184th St in Belmont (Bronx).
• The Red Cross Heroes Gala is over, but you can relive some of the highlights with this sizzle reel and hear some impressions of the event from board member Sudeep Doshi.
• Video Reel: After a dear friend's car accident, Jennifer understood the need to donate blood to help others.
• Last Wednesday, many NY state landmarks and buildings lit red in honor of Red Cross Giving Day including the iconic Empire State Building and the Mario Cuomo Bridge.
• As part of the Empire State Building lighting ceremony, Univision reporter Alejandro Condis shared the touching story of his great grandfather’s connection to the Red Cross.
• News12 reported on the Red Cross helping displaced residents after a fire on New York Ave in East Flatbush (Brooklyn).
• We shared this video short highlighting the #LIRedCross opened a reception center and helping 12 families after a fire on Great East Neck Rd in West Babylon (Suffolk) on Feb. 24.

Last Week in Review

• The United Federation of Teachers (UFT) hosted an incredible day of teamwork and community spirit in the Bronx as Red Cross volunteers and partners came together to make families safer and more prepared earlier this month.
• Over the weekend, #MetroNYNRedCross (in Greenwich) and #LIRedCross (in Brentwood) traded their red for green ☘️ to march in annual St. Patrick’s Day parades.
• Queens Councilman Shekar Krishnan recorded an upcoming PSA to promote the #GetAlarmedNYC program in his district.
• After a fire on Great Neck Road in Copiague last Thursday, the #LIRedCross in coordination with Suffolk County FRES have opened a shelter at Our Lady of the Assumption to support displaced residents.
• Last Wednesday, we honored the heroism and community service of Petty Officer Scott Ruskan, Postal Worker Chris Perez, Ted Hathaway, Peanuts Worldwide LLC and Major League Baseball at the Red Cross Heroes Gala at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.
• More than 200 Red Crossers gathered online and in person on Long Island to learn new skills and get ready to support our neighbors in need!
• Last Tuesday, the Norwood News and NY1 reported on the Red Cross helping 17 adults and 3 children after a fire on Kingsbridge Avenue in the Bronx.
• After a big fire in the Tremont section of the Bronx late Monday night, News12BX shared that the Red Cross is supporting 63 people as they start to recover.
• Last Monday, Brooklyn Paper highlighted a rash of unrelated fires in Brooklyn over the weekend, with the Red Cross helping 11 people.
• Our hearts go out to those impacted by a fatal fire in Flushing (Queens) on Monday afternoon, with coverage from ABC7.
• In her latest column in the Greenwich Sentinel, #MetroNYNRedCross CEO Stephanie Dunn Ashley encourages all to catch the spirit of service as we celebrate Red Cross Month

• On Sunday, our incredible Team Red Cross runners hit the streets of NYC with purpose, resilience, and heart as they ran the #UnitedNYCHalf marathon to benefit the Red Cross mission.
• PIX11 and ABC7 reported on the Red Cross helping families after a fire on Conklin Avenue in Canarsie (Brooklyn).
• News12 reported on the Red Cross helping a family after a fire on Webster Avenue in the Bronx.
• Last Saturday was a wonderful day of service led by our Clara's Council members, who installed 83 alarms and shared important fire safety information with 85 residents.
• VIDEO REEL: After being a part of the monumental community response to help families after the 5-alarm fire on Cottage/Park Avenue in Mount Vernon back in November, Darnell was inspired to join the Red Cross Disaster Action Team as a volunteer.
• Last Friday, the Norwood News reported on the Red Cross helping 2 residents and a cat after a fire on Decatur Avenue in the Norwood section of the Bronx.
• PIX11, ABC7, People, Newsday and CBS2 reported on the #LIRedCross helping 2 families (9 adults and 2 children) after a fatal fire on Albemarle Ave in Hempstead (Nassau County).
• At the NY State Senate Session on March 11, a resolution was in introduced by Senator Gustavo Rivera to proclaim March is Red Cross Month and 3 amazing Red Cross volunteers were recognized for their service to their communities.
• Last Wednesday, we held a special ceremony in Albany to honor our American Red Cross mission Champions Dana Levenberg and Charles D. Lavine as legislators of the year!
• The Long Island Herald reported on the #LIRedCross helping 3 families (6 adults and 3 children) following a fire on Washington Street in Freeport (Nassau County).

• News12 reported on the #LIRedCross honoring five coaches who leapt into action to help save a student who went into cardiac arrest during tryouts with the Lifesaving Award.
• Last Wednesday, we held a powerful panel discussion with Mount Vernon leaders and Red Cross responders to reflect on the response to a devastating five-alarm fire on Cottage Avenue/Park Avenue in November 2025 - and the community mobilization that followed.
