Over the last seven days, the Greater New York Red Cross has provided emergency assistance to 99 adults and 41 children following 45 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• Over the weekend, our Preparedness Teams distributed fire safety information and signed up residents for free smoke alarm installations at several Long Island community events and at the Muslim Heritage Festival in Valhalla, NY.
• Did you learn hands only CPR with our team at the at the Community Health and Back to School Fair at South Shore HS in Brooklyn?
• Last Sunday, some of our Service to the Armed Forces volunteers (and their pet therapy dogs) attended a special Veterans Appreciation game with the Hudson Valley Renegades.
• With the start of the school year just days away, MNYN Chapter’s own Stephanie Dunn Ashley shared these great back-to-school safety tips in her monthly column with the Greenwich Sentinel, and also spoke with a reporter about how MNYN is helping out after disasters in Guam and Hawaii.
• Last Thursday, Stephanie Dunn Ashley also visited Senator Bill Weber’s office in Nanuet to announce our partnership to help #EndHomeFires in Rockland County.
• Congressman Anthony D'Esposito showed his support for the Home Fire Campaign by recording this Sound the Alarm PSA.
• Earlier in the week, News 12 Long Island reported on our #LongIsland Disaster Action Team supported residents displaced by a fire in Deer Park.
• The Red Cross’ Condolence Care Team connected with the family of the victim after the fatal fire in Forest Hills, Queens on August 18.

• Outreach team had a great time sharing preparedness information on Saturday during a community event at Gateway Christian Center in Valley Stream, NY.
• Volunteer Gio Mata also trained 11 chaplains in emergency preparedness in Far Rockaway, NY.
• Last Friday, CBS NY reported on how the Jill and John Coyle Blood Donor Center in Greenwich, CT has seen an influx of new blood donors after the Red Cross implemented new, inclusive FDA guidelines.
• Hey Barbie! Our summer intern produced this fun beach safety video inspired by the Summer Blockbuster.
• Last Wednesday, News 12 reported on the Red Cross assisting thirteen families after a building was vacated in Mott Haven.
• It’s that time of year again! Get ready to go back to school with these important back-to-school tips.
• Last Tuesday, we trained 240 students in Hands Only CPR at the Back to School Resource Fair held at Yankee Stadium.
• The NY Yankees also helped us to “Sound the Alarm” about home fire safety with this video PSA.
• Pat recently shared her experience about making her first apheresis donation of platelets.
• The Metro New York North Chapter welcomed Katie Fortunato as a new board member.

Last Week in Review

• Our hearts and thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragic wildfires in Hawaii. If you’re looking for ways to help those affected by the wildfires, here is some info from USA Today. 
• Over the weekend, four Red Crossers from Greater New York (so far) deployed to help with the Hawaii response both physically and virtually, talking with CBS 2, PIX 11, and News12 Long Island. 
• On the eve of his deployment to the Hawaii wildfire relief operation, we featured volunteer Bowen Yu on his journey providing relief in Guam to preparing for the wildfires of Maui. 
• For the 50th birthday of Hip-Hop, we celebrated our very own Hip-Hop pioneer and Long Island Volunteer Jemillah Abdul-Kareem aka MC Glamorous! 
• NYS Assembly Member John Zaccaro Jr helped to “Sound the Alarm” about home fires with this video PSA. 
• Did you catch our interim CEO Celena Sarillo and External Affairs Officer Desiree Ramos Reiner at the 75th anniversary of WABC-TV Day last Wednesday? 
• Last Tuesday, News12 reported the GNY Red Cross assisted 9 displaced families affected by a Bronx fire. 
• We hosted Senator Alexis Weik at our “Prepare, Respond, Recover” event at the Sachem Library to improve the safety of our community. 
• A big congratulations to Red Crosser Ethie and our furry friend Zoe on her 100th pet therapy visit to West Point.
• Volunteer Larry Cryer shared his experience of being a lifelong blood donor donating plasma and platelets for the first time in this post. 
• Two weeks ago, our Service to the Armed Forces team participated in Coast Guard Day at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island to celebrate the 233rd Birthday of US Coast Guard.

• We featured volunteer Mary Cueva on her journey through Hurricane Mitch and providing relief during Hurricane Ida. 
• Last Wednesday, CBS News and News12 reported the GNY Red Cross assisted 2 displaced families affected by an East New York fire. 
• Many thanks to our Red Cross team members across our NYC, Long Island, and Metro NY North Chapters who came out to participate in National Night Out last Tuesday. 
• State Senator Kirsten Gillibrand helped to “Sound the Alarm” about home fires with this video PSA.
• Earlier in the week, our Service to the Armed Fores Team celebrated the 233rd Birthday of the US Coast Guard by attending a ceremony where NYC was designated as a Coast Guard City. 
• Metro NY North Chapter CEO Stephanie Dunn Ashley shared her experience of being a lifelong blood donor donating plasma and platelets for the first time in this post.
