From May 20-27, the American Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 125 adults and 49 children following 51 local disaster responses. Here are some highlights from the past week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• Our deepest thanks to all the volunteers who placed flags and decorations at Calverton National Cemetery this Memorial Day weekend to honor and remember the US service members who gave their lives in service of our country..
• Over the weekend, our Service to the Armed Forces Team warmly welcomed visitors during Fleet Week at the Intrepid and collected more than 300 cards to send to service members.
• Long Island’s own local volunteer Mitchell Ostrover was featured on the Texas Gulf Coast Red Cross blog about his daughter’s heartwarming tradition of donating platelets whenever he (or his wife, Leslie) deploys to help people in need.
• On Saturday, the Metro NY North chapter had an information table at the Greenwich Town Party and helped families sign up for the upcoming Safety Town event, where kindergarteners can learn about the people who keep them safe.
• Our SAF team kicked off Memorial Day Weekend with a special tour of the USS Bataan, which is visiting NYC for Fleet Week 2024.
• In this video, new volunteer Kehui Yan shared what it was like to volunteer for the first time with our Sound the Alarm campaign.
• Last Friday, Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas tweeted about the Red Cross assisting a family after a fire on 83rd Street in Jackson Heights, Queens.
• Disaster volunteers Alex and Katriel were presented with a GNY challenge coin in recognition of their commitment and contributions to the Red Cross mission.

Upcoming Events and Activities

• The American Red Cross of Greater New York is looking for 2 NYC Civic Corps members to commit to 10 months of service from September 2024 to June 2025 with the Volunteer Services Department. Frank shared his experience as an AmeriCorps member with GNY Red Cross. Go to www.nycservice.org/nyc_civic_corps for application and benefits information.
• June 10-21: Sign up your kindergartener for the one-week safety education program, Safety Town in Greenwich, Conn.
