Nearly 100 volunteers gathered in Riverhead to install free smoke alarms throughout Suffolk County.

Over the last seven days, the Greater New York Red Cross has provided emergency assistance to 162 adults and 49 children following 59 local disaster responses. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• Last Friday, the RiverheadLOCAL reported nearly 100 Long Island Red Cross volunteers, government officials and corporate partners installed free smoke alarms and educated the community on fire safety throughout Suffolk County as part of the Sound the Alarm campaign.
• NY1 spoke with Red Cross Response Manager Nancy Soto about the uptick in recent fires and the need for more volunteers.
• As part of AAPI Heritage month, we are spotlighting volunteers like Sung Hwang who teaches International Humanitarian Law in our latest #MyRedCrossLife post.
• Last Tuesday, NY1 reported the Red Cross responded to a fatal fire on Valentine Avenue in the Fordham section of the Bronx and provided assistance to 10 people from three different families. Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson thanked the American Red Cross and other first responders for the swift response.
• NY1 and News 12 Bronx reported on the Bronx communities collaborating with the FDNY and Red Cross to prevent future fires.
• Last February, Lou Cousens turned to the Red Cross after a massive fire destroyed his New Rochelle home. Learn more about how Red Cross volunteers, including caseworker Felicia Fried, came to his aid when he needed it most.
