The #LIRedCross opened a shelter for displaced residents after a fire in Freeport.

From Oct 20-26, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 188 adults and 54 children following 50 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

• Last week, after a fire tore through an apartment building in Freeport, NY — displacing 19 households, our Long Island volunteers stepped up to help open a shelter for two nights. See coverage from Newsday, Hoodline, News12, ABC7 and CBS2.
• Last Friday, our Service to the Armed Forces team joined the spooky and fun Trunk or Treat event for all the military and Department of Defense kids at Ft. Hamilton in Brooklyn!
• Last Thursday, News12 reported on the Red Cross helping 4 families after a fire on Deitz Street in Central Islip (Suffolk County).

• We published a touching story about how the Red Cross helped Cristina and her family when their family home caught on fire, just months after moving in.
• At our Long Island Heroes Celebration last Wednesday, we were proud to honor local #LIHeroes like Dr. Tochi Iroku-Malize, Mel Cohen, Charlie Dubofsky and Sydney Hassenbein, Luv Michael, Jennifer Keane, and Officers Timothy Deegan & Matthew Walling for their heroism and contributions to the community.
