Over the last seven days, the Greater New York Red Cross has provided emergency assistance to 204 adults and 76 children following 57 local disaster responses. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• For Shark Week, we’ve partnered with Discovery to avoid summer blood shortages where blood donors automatically enter and get a chance to win an outdoor adventure package.

• As part of Shark Week, we shared a video of Jess Reid from IN Greenwich donating blood as a shark.

• On Friday, Speaker of the New York State Assembly, Carl E. Heastie sponsored a sickle cell initiative focused blood drive in the Bronx community at the Eastchester Church of God.

• Staten Island Borough President Vito J. Fossella, partnering with our Sound the Alarm program, recorded a PSA to raise awareness of the program.

• Valeria Jones, a Red Cross volunteer and IHL expert, shared how she found her passion for international affairs and raising awareness of IHL through working with the Red Cross.

• Last week, we shared heatwave and pet heat safety tips in regards to NYC heat advisories.

Last Week in Review

• Yesterday, the Long Island Red Cross assisted four adults and three dogs affected by a house fire in Islip Terrace.

• In honor of the historic Bronx high rise fire on January 9, 2022, the NY Red Cross partnered with the FDNY and BABA Inc to provide home fire training.

• On Friday, Long Island Red Cross volunteers and the Bethpage High School Red Cross Club gathered at the 2022 Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride in Babylon to support the veterans and participants.

• On Friday, we taught Hands-Only CPR at NYPD Preparedness Day.

• On Thursday, Senator James Sanders Jr. joined our volunteers to install fire alarms for our Sound the Alarm Campaign in Far Rockaway.

• Last week, ABC7NY reported on a multi-family house fire in White Plains where Red Cross provided financial aid for the displaced residents.

• We also shared some summer safety tips to beat the heat.

• Also on Thursday, 30 summer campers in Manhattan learned about emergency preparedness through the Pillowcase Project at the Chelsea Recreation Center.

• Reserve + National Guard Magazine spotlighted our own Regional Preparedness Manager, Jason Lyons on his military career and his international disaster work with the Red Cross.

• On Wednesday, we partnered with the Greenwich Fire Department to give Eddy, the grandchild of one of our Metro NY North volunteers, the special experience of being their Fire Chief for the day.

• Last week, the Red Cross provided emergency housing and financial assistance to families affected by a Bronx apartment fire.

• Assemblyman Michael Lawler and the Finkelstein Memorial Library hosted a Red Cross blood drive in Spring Valley, NY on Thursday.

• On Wednesday, Bronx News 12 reported on a Bronx fire where the Red Cross helped multiple families with emergency housing and financial aid.

• Last week, we proudly welcomed our new Board Chair, Jill Coyle, and our new Board Members, Suresh Muthuswami and Frank Stadelmaier.

• Sammy Chu, a board member of the Long Island Red Cross, shared his inspiring story of how he came to work with the Red Cross.

• Friday afternoon, The NY Times, NY1, and QNS (among others) reported on a deadly fire in Queens where the NY Red Cross provided emergency housing and financial aid to families who were impacted.

• On Thursday, News 12 Brooklyn reported on an overnight Newburgh fire where the Red Cross helped affected families.

• Also on Thursday, a discussion was held with NFL and NBA representatives at our New York HQ on trends and community impact priorities.

• Connor Gray, a student at the University of Manchester shared his meaningful experience working with the Red Cross to help promote the Civic Corps Program.

• Last Tuesday, the NY Red Cross participated in Heat Action Day by hosting a flash mob in Times Square.

• At the 2022 Long Island Heroes Among Us Gala on September 22, an everyday hero (or group of heroes who acted together) from Long Island will be honored and recognized. There’s still time for you to nominate someone for consideration! Nominate a Hero today!

• On Friday, Red Cross volunteers taught Hands-Only CPR and AED training to over 75 participants from the Deloitte Group.

• Lallita Maharaj, a member of our Service to the Armed Forces team shares her courageous story traveling to Eastern Europe with the American Red Cross to support US service members.

• Last week, Safety Town opened its doors, educating kids on awareness and accident prevention.
