From August 3-9, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 115 adults and 29 children following 38 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• GNY Red Crossers like Vivian Moy and Lenia Kiki have deployed across the country in response to tornadoes, wildfires and flooding.
• Last Friday, CBS2 reported on the Red Cross assisting 8 residents after a lightning strike caused a fire at the Parth Knolls Apartment Complex on Hawkes Avenue in Westchester.
• From Brentwood to Staten Island to Yonkers to Spring Valley, our team had a great time during National Night Out, sharing important safety and preparedness information with our neighbors across 12 communities.
• Last Wednesday, NY1, amNY, NY Daily News, Gothamist, SI Advance, ABC7, News12, PIX11, FOX5, CBS2 and Norwood News reported on the Red Cross opening a reception center and helping 18 families after a fatal fire on East 209th Street in Norwood (Bronx).
• We posted this web story about how the third annual Battle of the Clubs generated 65 units of life saving blood, including 20 first-time blood donors.
• Back in June, we recognized Les Sugai with the International Services Award for his exceptional local work, which has global impact in saving lives of the world’s most vulnerable people.
• We posted a reel highlighting the Red Cross helping 6 families after a fire on Briggs Ave in the Bronx on July 16.
• Emily Miethner shared the story with ABC7 about how she received 20+ blood transfusions post birth to help bring attention to the historic blood shortage happening now.
• First-time donor Síle knows the importance of maintaining a good blood supply to help each other.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities

• For only the 2nd time in its history, the Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis. Patients may already be impacted. Blood donations have fallen to a 4-year summer low. Donors, especially those with type O blood, are needed ASAP to help save lives. Book your appointment now.
